NEW! Essay Contest for Residents and Fellows
The ACGME is excited to announce an essay contest for residents and fellows to share their insights and experiences with nutrition in patient care. The author of the winning essay will receive complimentary registration for the #ACGME2027 Annual Educational Conference and travel expenses for the conference or a $3,000 cash prize.
Essays must be a maximum of 700 words and should address the interplay between nutrition and health care. Residents/fellows must be in an ACGME-accredited program during the 2025-2026 academic year to apply.
The deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. Central on June 30, 2026.

TODAY! Back to Bedside Proposals Due April 20, 2026

The ACGME's Back to Bedside initiative is designed to empower residents and fellows to develop transformative projects that foster meaning and joy in work and allow them to engage on a deeper level with what is at the heart of medicine: their patients. The Request for Proposals for 2026-2028 closes today.
This initiative supports resident- and fellow-directed innovations that are shared on a national platform. Awardees participate in Learning Collaboratives throughout the funding period to workshop and refine their projects and develop leadership skills. Grant recipients will also present their projects at the 2028 ACGME Annual Educational Conference in Orlando, Florida.
A travel stipend is included to help cover costs associated with meetings.
Proposals are due today, April 20, 2026.

- Should have at least three years’ experience as a program director, department chair, associate/assistant program director, and/or core faculty member.
- Applicants not currently serving in one of these roles may be considered if they held one of these positions within the last three years.
- Applicants’ programs must have a status of Continued Accreditation.

Nutrition Requirements
As part of ongoing initiatives around nutrition education, the ACGME has developed a set of proposed program requirements that define required experiences and competencies. Each Review Committee was asked to consider whether any of these requirements should be added to the relevant specialty-/subspecialty-specific Program Requirements or if existing requirements adequately address the required experiences.
The ACGME invites comments from the community prior to finalizing these requirements. It is anticipated that the final requirements will be submitted to the ACGME Board of Directors for consideration at its September 2026 meeting, with a requested effective date of July 1, 2027.

Serious Play: Gamifying Education on Health-Related Social Needs

In this New Ideas article, the authors outline a novel application of gamification in GME: a board game-style simulation called "A Year in the Life." Teams chose an insurance plan (or to remain uninsured) and went through a series of life events. Teams were successful if they maintained a positive net worth at the end of the game without major adverse health outcomes.
