NEW! Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME) Articles of the Week

Deciding How Much to Trust AI for Teaching and Assessment

Carl Preiksaitis, MD, MEd

This third installment in JGME’s AI Teaching Rounds examines how much human oversight should be required when artificial intelligence (AI) is used for different teaching and assessment tasks. The article adapts an approach called the “SCALES-AI framework” to assess which tasks are not appropriate for AI (Level 0) and progresses to those that can safely be performed with full AI autonomy (Level 6).

Development of Nested Entrustable Professional Activities: A Delphi Consensus Study in General Surgery

Alyssa Murillo, MD, MS, MAEd; Camilla Gomes, MD, MS; Riley Brian, MD, MAEd; Ye Lim Lee, BS; Kara Faktor, MD; Adnan Alseidi, MD, MAEd; Olle ten Cate, PhD; Patricia S. O’Sullivan, MS, EdD; Lan Vu, MD, MAS

Nested entrustable professional activities (EPAs) are small units of professional practice that provide focused feedback on tasks that must be mastered before being integrated into the broader EPA. This study introduces intra-operative nested surgical EPAs to improve the assessment of mid-level surgical residents, a model that could be adapted to other specialties.

A Low-Fidelity Procedural Simulation Using the Game Operation to Train Faculty in Feedback Skills

Kelly Currie, MD, FACS; Sara Greer, MD; Ashley Weinhold, MD; Abby Spencer, MD, MS, FACP

This article, part of JGME’s annual New Ideas collection of novel interventions, introduces a new simulation based on the board game “Operation” to replicate a sterile procedure and train faculty members in peri-procedural feedback. The simulation requires only the game and printed framework checklists, making it feasible for any program to implement.
